Sandy Lake Motel Receives Partnership of the Year Business Award
Joe and Linda Fiddler, owners of Sandy Lake Motel, were presented with the Partnership of the Year Award at the 24th Annual Nishnawbe-Aski Development Fund Business Awards on October 30, 2014 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This is the second time Joe and Linda have been recognized with the Partnership of the Year award from NADF.

New Diamond Driller's Helpers in Sandy Lake
There are ten new Surface Diamond Driller’s Helpers in Sandy Lake who are ready for work in the mining exploration field.
In partnership with Confederation College and funded by the Ministry of Economic Development Trade and Employment, the Sandy Lake Ontario Works Program was successful in getting ten social assistance recipients trained and certified as Diamond Driller’s Helpers at Firesteel Camp, west of Upsala.

Six Sandy Lake Youth Playing in Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League
September 24, 2014 - SANDY LAKE, ON
Six young men from Sandy Lake are making their hockey dreams a reality as they skate with the Grey Highlands Bravehearts of the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League this season.
Gunther Fiddler #4, age 19; Stiler McKay #9, age 20; Todd Crowe #11, age 20; River Crowe #18, age 19; Chad Linklater #23, age 20; and Randale McPherson #61, age 19 have been playing hockey together since they were young boys.

Memorial feasts are a common practice in Sandy Lake First Nation. The customary tradition commemorates the passing of a loved one by giving thanks through preparing and sharing food with the entire community every year on the anniversary of the loved ones passing.

It was a meeting that Chief Bart Meekis hopes will put Sandy Lake First Nation on the worldwide map. And on Friday, August 8th, Sandy Lake took front and centre stage at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg with none other than guitar legend Carlos Santana.
Canoe Paddlers Stop in Sandy Lake On Way To Fort Severn
On Saturday evening, hunters from Sandy Lake First Nation spotted two men in a canoe paddling the waters of Ozaagaywaywahning, 25 km northwest of the community. The hunters, who had just shot a moose, stopped to say hello to the paddlers and to share a piece of fresh moose meat. By late Sunday morning the paddlers were docking their canoe along the shores of the Severn River in the community of Sandy Lake.
Muddy Water Music Festival Takes Center Stage
The Muddy Water Music Festival is well underway at the Treaty Site in Sandy Lake. Rez Metal, Lil Lucan, DJ Ken G, Blu and a Katy Perry Tribute Show were some of the musicians to perform on the second day of the festival today.
Garry Kehoe performed Johnny Cash favorites like Ring of Fire as well as the Hank Snow classic I'm Moving On. He was even joined onstage by June Carter for a rendition of Jackson. Crowd favorite Blu closed Thursday's lineup.

Sandy Lake Athletes Compete at North American Indigenous Games
Six athletes from Sandy Lake First Nation are representing Team Ontario at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Regina from July 20-27, 2014.
The athletes join 6,000 other participants from 26 regions across North American competing in 14 different sports.

Head Shaving Event Raises $5,731

A fundraising event to help cancer patients and their families in Sandy Lake raised $5,731 on May 27.
Fifteen people, including four children shaved their heads to raise money for Sandy Lake First Nation Cancer Funds.

Chief and Council has released the BCR dated May 20, 2014 with the list of Sandy Lake band members who will receive one of 10 new houses this year. They were chosen by the elected bodies of Chief and Council and Sandy Lake Housing Authority Board Members.

Scott Meekis Enters the Den in Thunder Bay
THUNDER BAY, ON - May 22, 2014
Scott Meekis was one of five finalists to Enter the Den today in Thunder Bay. The Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School graduate from Sandy Lake presented his business plan, Native Beadwork in the competition inspired by the popular Canadian television show The Dragons Den.
According to Scott, Native Beadwork would sell traditional hand-crafted products like moccasins, mukluks, mitts and hats made by himself and other craftspeople from Sandy Lake.
Sandy Lakers Run 10 Mile Road Race in Thunder Bay
Sandy Lake competed in the annual Fire Fighter’s 10 Mile Road Race in Thunder Bay this Victoria Day.
A total of 15 runners representing Sandy Lake were a part of the 1,100 runners to trek the 10 miles along Lake Superior starting from the south end of Simpson Street to Marina Park and back.
Two youth teams participated in the rally event. The Sandy Lake Running Club finished in first place and the Thomas Fiddler Turbos placed 11th in their respective categories.

Students from Thomas Fiddler Memorial High School will be performing at the 7th Annual Outside Looking In (OLI) Performance on May 14, 2014 at the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto.

In December 2009, the Community Christmas Choir celebrated its 10th Annual Christmas Concert. The Choir had been performing since 2000 with an avid group of community members of all ages and musical talents. Accompanying the voices in harmony were instruments like acoustic guitar, accordian, violin, keyboard, and tone-chimes.
To celebrate the 10th Annual Christmas Concert, the Choir recorded and released a CD.

A Visit With Dr. Bartlett
Dr. Bartlett was a physician at the Favourable Lake Mine from 1942 to 1949. As a mining physician he treated people who worked at the mine as well as Native people in the surrounding area.
Dr. Bartlett entered medical school at the age of 17 and started practicing medicine at the age of 24. During his practice at the Favourable Lake Mine, he developed a cannulated intravenous needle to administer medicine which is now used by healthcare professionals worldwide.
