Update On Impact of NCB Funding Cuts To School Snack Program

September 22, 2014 - Sandy Lake, ON

Update on Impact of National Child Benefit (NCB) Funding Cuts to School Snack Program

Back in April 2014, we announced funding cuts to NCB programs. Since then we have been working with our partners to address these impacts and develop a plan to continue a snack program at the schools.

The schools have formed Snack Program Committees who are keen and committed to ensuring that students receive snacks with the limited funding. They have started fundraising to supplement the available funding. The following was presented to the schools and they have embraced this idea.

SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION
NCB NUTRITION PROGRAM

Approved Budget 2014/2015 $214,580
Outstanding Northern Account 2013/2014 (-$70,000)
Projected Christmas Food Hampers (-$70,000)
Remaining Budget 2014/2015 $74,580

Proposal:
Divide the $74,580 between the schools based on enrolment numbers
For example: October 2014 to March 2015 = 6 months
Divide $74,580 by 6 months = $12,430/month

FOR EXAMPLE ONLY:
Elementary School 70% = $8,700
High School 25% = $3,108
Christian School 5% = $622

Each school would be responsible for how to spend this monthly amount. The amount will be deposited into a separate account at the beginning of each month. Once the amount is spent, there will be no more until the next month. Each school may supplement this funding through fundraising or any other sources.

The Christmas Food Hampers will continue as in previous years, perhaps with a few changes.

We are open to any ideas, suggestions on how we can maximize the funding available.
