Sandy Lake Youth Council Established

Sandy Lake has their first ever youth council.

The newly elected council were nominated by their peers during a recent youth conference. Out of more than 20 candidates, five were elected to council on June 10th.

The youth conference themed “It Starts…With Us” and hosted by the Brighter Futures Program saw close to 100 participants gather for two-days at the high school on June 4th and 5th.

The goals of the youth conference was to get input from the youth on community issues important to them and to establish the youth council, says Brighter Futures Program coordinators Brandon Goodman and Cherish Fiddler.

Chief and Council welcomed the youth council at a swearing-in ceremony during Treaty Days to signify their commitment to their new roles and responsibilities in the community.
