News Release: Passing of community elder
It is with great sadness we announce the loss of respected and cherished elder, Laura Jane Meekis (Kakegamic). She was affectionately known to everyone as Nana-Jean.
Nana-Jean passed away early this morning, Friday, April 24, 2009, in Sioux Lookout after being medivaced out of the community yesterday afternoon. She was 73 years old.
Nana-Jean is predeceased by her husband David Meekis, brother Cornelius Kakegamic, and brother-in-law Bill (Irene) Meekis.
She is survived by her twin sister, Janisse Kakekapetum; and her adopted children Daniel (Annie) Meekis of Sandy Lake, Kendal (Mark) Kakegamic of Sandy Lake, Bertha (Stephan) Rae of North Spirit Lake, Raymond (Phyllomena) Meekis of North Spirit Lake, and Audrey (Alex) Flett of Garden Hill, Manitoba.
Nana-Jean will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Drenton, Norman, Breeanne, Demitra, Tricia, Trevin, Jenna, Maggie, Donna, Rhya, Ryder, Alexandra, Angel, and many more.
