Press Release - Wasaya Airplane Fire

Press Release

At 12:43 pm local time, on June 12th 2012, a Wasaya Charter Hawker Siddley 748, performing a routine fuel drop off, caught fire at the Sandy Lake Airport tarmac. At this time it is not known how the fire started. No one was injured.

The Chief and Council are appreciative that the Ministry of Natural Resources that happened to be based in the community, were quick to respond and took charge of the situation along with Local Fire Department, NAPS, and local Band Constables.

Treaty Days Booth Information

For those interested in getting a booth for this year's 2012 Treaty Days, please speak to Evangeline Meekis at the Band Office.
Booths will require a $25.00 payment per day and receipts will be given for payments.

Class Tour of Band Office

 The Band Office had some visitors earlier during the day when a group of students fom Apin Kakegamik's 5C gym class took a tour of the building. 
They took a tour of the wide variety of offices and departments, they went everywhere from the Justice department, Welfare, Administration, and even got to view the meeting room where all the big decisions are made by the Chief and Council, getting a view of what goes on inside the core of their very own community.

in the other games the Midget and bantams Teams Lost  Both games to Lac Seul in the A-side Finals

Muddy Water Music Festival

First time in the History of the music festival, four full days of sun and more sun. Saturday was a beauitful night, music was awesome and Drink ME Pretty came back to Sandy Lake to steal the Show, Yes they came back, the crowd favourite was one of the highlights. Sandy Lake had its talent, Regradless, Loud n Proud, End of Violence, Deafening and Owl. were great. Crowd was there Saturday night.

Weather held out for day two of the music festival, hopefully it will stay the same for the next few days, Not once, in past years did we have sun all through the weekend, Crowd was scarce for the second day, but maybe tonight will change, at press time we don’t know who is headlining, “Drink Me Pretty” was the crowd favorite and Billy Joe Green closed the night.

Muddy Water Festival Started off with the Battle of Bands with “Owls” winning Thursday’s opening act, and “End Of Violence” winning Friday nights and the winner of the Whole thing was “Loud and Proud” Earning the right to open for the Grand finale  on Saturday night. “Crowd was not as good as other years” dictated Organizer Roy Kakegamic, But the Talent was good.
And “Drink ME Pretty” an all girl band from Norway House Mb.

Sandy Lake Chief Adam Fiddler along with Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy , Koocheching Chief  William Harper and Pikangikum Chief Jonah Strang met with Queen Elizabeth II at Queens Park in Toronto on July 6th, 2010.

Tentative Schedule of Events for Centennial Commemoration

Treaty 5 fundraising Gala featuring National Chief Shawn Atleo

AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo and other leadership will be at the Treaty 5 Commemoration Gala tonight in Thunder Bay.

The gala is a fundraising event for the Treaty 5 Centennial Commemoration event that is being in held in Deer Lake and Sandy Lake on June 9, 2010.

Other leadership that is expected at the gala include Chiefs of Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulous, NAN Grand Chief Stan Beardy, and Treaty 5's Sandy Lake Chief Adam Fiddler and Deer Lake Chief Roy Dale Meekis.

The official website for the Treaty 5 Centennial Commemoration went live on May 5, 2010.

Following the General Band Election yesterday, March 26, 2010, here are the results for the election of Chief and Council and Elders Council for 2010-2012 as announced by the election committee:

Junior Rangers learn new skills

Junior Rangers in Sandy Lake learned how to make emergency stoves last weekend.  13 Junior Canadian Rangers spent two days in outdoor skills training that also included ice fishing and snowmobile safety.

The group was led in by JCR Master Corporal Rodney Rae, Sgt. Carson Fiddler, JCR Warrant Officer Mark Kendall, Canadian Ranger Glen Kakepetum and newly sworn-in Canadian Ranger Fabian Groves.
