Youth Council travel to Parliament Hill

Two members of the Sandy Lake Youth Council were in Ottawa Monday for the release of the report Feathers of Hope: A First Nations Youth Action Plan.

Youth Chief Darrin Fiddler and Youth Deputy Chief Seth Fiddler went to Parliament Hill to present the findings of the report to Federal, Provincial and First Nation leadership, asking all levels of government to commit their support of the report.

February 3 Deadline for Employment Opportunities with Welfare Department

The deadline to apply for several new employment opportunities with the Welfare Department is Monday, February 3, 2014.

On January 17, Welfare Administration announced they received funding for the Full Delivery Ontario Works Program. As a result, the Welfare Department will see an increase in staff from 9 current positions to a total of 23 positions.

Winter Road Open to Light Traffic

The winter road via Red Lake route is now open to light traffic, SLCDS Inc. Manager Nick Day confirmed this morning. The Corporation is waiting for the okay from Deer Lake to determine when the ice is thick enough for transport trailers to safely travel on.

Election Code Referendum Notice & Final Draft

The Final Draft of the Election Code is now available. There will be a referendum regarding the Election Code on Wednesday, January 15, 2013.

Odoodem-mahw Mukooshaywin “Friends Feast”

Odoodem-mahw Mukooshaywin “Friends Feast”

One of the traditional events for Christmas in Sandy Lake is Odoodem-mahw Mukooshaywin or Friends Feast.

It is a gathering to welcome departed loved ones who come to visit between Christmas and New Years.

The belief is that on Christmas Day the spirits of those who passed away return to the relatives to visit and share the celebration of Christmas.

National Chief Shawn Atleo Visits Sandy Lake

Sandy Lake First Nation had a special visitor last week – AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo spent a few hours in the community to celebrate the re-opening of the Thomas Fiddler Memorial Elementary School in September.

New Youth Council Elected

On November 18, 2013 the youth of Sandy Lake elected a new Youth Council. The five-member council is made up of one youth from each of the five main geographical areas of the community.

The new council appointed the positions of Chief, Deputy Chief and Councillors.

Election Committee Hosting Youth Meeting

When: Tuesday, November 12 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Where: Youth Centre

There will be a Youth Focus Group meeting to discuss and hear comments, suggestions and other input regarding the draft Election Code.

Youth between ages 18-29 years are invited to drop by between 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. for a chat and munchies.

We want to hear from you.

Youth Council Nominations and Election

Nominations for the Sandy Lake Youth Council will take place Friday, November 8th from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. at the Band Office.

Candidates are required to have a nominator and seconder sign their nomination form (available at the Band Office). To be eligible for nomination, potential candidates must be between the ages of 17-29 years and be a Sandy Lake band member. 

The Youth Council will be chosen by its peers next week. Five youth will be elected, each representing their respective geographical area of residence.

The Election Committee will be hosting a phone-in radio show Monday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time) as part of the community consultation process.

Band members (on and off-reserve) are encouraged to call in with questions, comments, suggestions and overall input regarding the development of the Band Custom Election Code.

Hunting Week Notice

 The Robert Fiddler Administration Building will be closed the week of September 23-27, 2013 for hunting week. 

Elementary School Celebrates Reopening

On Friday, September 6, Sandy Lake First Nation will celebrate the grand reopening of its Thomas Fiddler Memorial Elementary School.  

The school was closed on February 21, 2012 when a fire caused extensive damage to the heating and electrical systems. The nearly 400 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 have since been schooled in other facilities. The students will be back in the classrooms on Monday, September 9.

Youth Centre Grand Opening

Sandy Lake is celebrating the grand opening of its new Youth Centre on Saturday, August 24, 2013.
 

The celebration will start at 6:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and will follow with a barbeque, games and live entertainment featuring local bands Muskewabo and Rez Metal. The festivities will wrap up at 11:30 p.m.
